Dental Crown

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a damaged or weakened tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Crowns are used when a tooth is severely decayed, cracked, or worn down, or after a root canal treatment to provide additional protection and stability.

Crowns can be made from various materials, including:

  • Porcelain: Aesthetic and natural-looking, ideal for front teeth.
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal: Combines the strength of metal with the appearance of porcelain, often used for back teeth.
  • Metal (gold or other alloys): Very durable and long-lasting, typically used for molars or teeth that are less visible.
  • Zirconia or Ceramic: Strong, durable, and highly aesthetic, often used for both front and back teeth.

Some Facts to Remember

The process of getting a dental crown usually requires two visits. During the first visit, the tooth is shaped to accommodate the crown, and an impression is taken to create a custom-fit restoration. A temporary crown is placed while the permanent one is being made. At the second visit, the permanent crown is placed and adjusted for proper fit, bite, and comfort.

Dental crowns not only restore function to a damaged tooth but also enhance the overall appearance of your smile, providing a natural and durable solution to tooth damage or decay.
